OM Multiservice Access Platforms

Next-Gen Optical Multiplexers

OM4000 Optical Multiplexer

Introduction

For fixed line and mobile network operators, typical offerings for network users now include some mix of bundled voice, data, and video services. Convergence is driving the need for access devices that are compact, affordable and fit both traditional and emerging applications.

OM next-generation optical multiplexers from Sycamore Networks provide flexible, low-cost aggregation and transport solutions. A small footprint and ability to reliably deliver mixed data and voice services to customer premises make the OM1000 ideal for deployment at customer locations and access network sites with low capacity requirements. The OM4000 is an ultra-compact, scalable, multiservice access platform designed to cost-efficiently manage and deliver bandwidth across the optical network, from access to core.

Both OM products support traditional T1/E1 and T3/E3 services, optical interfaces, and Ethernet over SONET/SDH with GFP/VCAT/LCAS.

OM Family Highlights

  • Cost-Efficient Convergence Solutions
  • SONET/SDH, PDH, and Ethernet Support
  • GFP, VCAT, and LCAS Functionality
  • Carrier-Class Redundancy & Protection
  • Remote Management Options
  • Proven Interoperability
  • Global Deployment Flexibility

Economical Aggregation

The OM1000 is a single rack-unit (1RU) device with low power consumption requirements and flexible service ports integrated into the base product. OM platforms can be configured for Terminal Multiplexer (TMUX), Add-Drop Multiplexer (ADM), or Digital Cross-Connect (DCS) operation, with T1/E1, T3/E3, or 10/100/1000 Ethernet service interfaces and trunk interfaces from OC-3/STM-1 to OC-48/STM-16. Non-blocking VT and STS cross-connect capability grooms traffic with maximum efficiency, and OM platforms can communicate over both IP and OSI DCC networks.

Carrier-Class Reliability

The OM4000 offers next-generation features in a compact, carrier-class platform, including front-accessible interfaces, Automatic Protection Switching; and redundant controllers, hot-swappable service modules, and power supplies with independent feeds. Extensive fault monitoring and diagnostic capabilities simplify troubleshooting and minimize ongoing operational expenses; integrated HTTP and SNMP support enables a complete, end-to-end managed solution.

Multiservice Flexibility

OM multiservice access products are well suited to small offices or corporate campuses where quality of service, network resiliency, and service flexibility are high priorities. They are frequently deployed in networks with relatively modest capacity requirements and as part of the mobile radio access network (RAN), transporting traffic from mobile wireless base stations. OM platforms are used to:

  • Distribute traffic across access networks as a ring or linear access platform
  • Collect traffic from the access edge, sub-tended off optical network platforms
  • Extend the range and reach of metro DWDM/CWDM systems
  • Aggregate traffic from mobile base stations for backhaul to the optical core
